The Kissing Hand
by Audrey Penn is a
touching story we read on the first day. The children
trace their hand on a piece of paper and I use a heart stamp
to stamp in the center of their hand print. At the
bottom, we fill in the blanks to the sentence:
________ started first grade
today and he (or she) feels __________.
At snack time, we enjoy hand
cookies with a candy kiss. You can purchase the hand
cookie cutter at Walmart or use a knife to cut the hand
shape yourself.

Chrysanthemum lends itself
to so many "getting-to-know-you" activities. After reading this wonderful
story, we use our names for a variety of things to do.
We also watch it on United Streaming and the children love
it the second time around! • Math: We counted
the letters in our first name. Then, we divided into
consonants and vowels. We graphed this data by letter,
consonant, and vowel. • Name Meaning: I look up each child's name in a
baby names book and we find out the meaning of their names.
* Name Homework: We complete a worksheet with
our parents about why we were given our name. • Character Ed: We discuss what it feels like to be
teased and how important it is to treat everyone kindly.
We discuss the Golden Rule: "Treat others the way we want to
be treated."
* Poem: We copied a great poem about our name to
save in our Poetry Folder.
* Flower Glyph: We created a flower glyph using our
names. On the yellow centers, we wrote our names.
We chose the amount of petals for each letter of our name.
Our stems were chosen by the amount of syllables in our
first name. We used the amount of leaves to represent
the vowels we have in our name. Altogether, we had a
great class bouquet! |
