Ride to Eat
CATFISH!
(part 6)
What? - A good excuse for a ride, and a chance to eat some good catfish!
When? - Lunch time, Saturday, May 3, 2008
Who? - Any rider who feels sociable and might be hungry.
Where? - Ezell’s Fish Camp, 776 Ezell Road, Lavaca, AL (205) 654-2205
If you are interested in attending please e-mail me so we can make sure we have enough food on hand. Or not, as I talked with Ezell’s and they will be prepared for ~ 100 of us.
A little history: For several years I lived near Ezell’s Fish Camp and it was a favorite place to take my family for a night out. I’ve been eating at Ezell’s for 30 years (about 1/3rd of its existence) and have never had a bad experience there.
Back in 2003, after much prodding by “Tugboat” Ray Fagan, “V-Dog” Steve Hunter and Ned Siddens, I agreed to organize the first Catfish RTE. Attendance was ~100 folks. Enough people enjoyed themselves that we've done it each year since. We usually have 80-130 folks show up.
More information –
Ezell’s Fish Camp is located on the northwest corner of where AL Hwy 10 crosses the Tombigbee River in Choctaw County, Alabama. It is about 11.5 miles from downtown Butler, AL to Ezell’s. For more info check out this article.
Ezell’s specializes in pond-raised catfish, your choice of whole or fillet. These are “Squealers”, not muddy-tasting large chunks of catfish steak. They also offer a variety of seafood, steak, hamburger, chicken and frog legs. If you are really hungry they do offer “all you can eat”, so don’t order the 2-piece fillet and then gripe about not getting enough food (though the 2 or 3 piece fillet is plenty for me).
The original Ezell’s Fish Camp, where we hold the RTE, is NOT this place: http://www.ezellsfishcamp.com/main.html

Lodging –
Camping - Ezell’s will allow camping on their property (good-sized open field bordered by hardwood forest) on Friday or Saturday night. They have graciously agreed to leave one of their restrooms unlocked so you will have access to a toilet and fresh drinking water. Please give them a call beforehand to make arrangements.
Motels
Search for nearby motels on the Google Maps link above and you'll find several in the area.
If you plan to stay in Butler, AL I recommend the Western Inn, (205) 459-4700. It is at the corner of AL Hwy 10 and Vanity Fair Rd. about one mile east of Butler.
I'll probably be staying at one of the “less expensive” motels in Thomasville, AL such as the Sunset Inn or the Best Value Inn.
I suggest that you NOT stay at the Budget Inn in Thomasville or the Depot Inn in Linden, AL.
If you want more upscale accommodations, major chain motels are available in Thomasville and Demopolis, AL and Meridian, MS.
If you have other questions or want some road suggestions in the area, please ask.
