FUN WAYS TO PRACTICE YOUR WORDS
Thanks to Mrs. Ross for many of these ideas.

•  GAME:  Play the Spelling Mover Game.  Click here to go to the game.

•  KARATE SPELLING:  We always do Karate Spelling before our test.  The teacher announces the word.  Then the students punch the air for each letter, as they spell the word orally.  If a letter is tall, such as a 'b' or a 'k', we punch up high.  If the letter only touches the mid-line of the paper, we punch forward.  If the letter goes below the line, such as a 'g' or a 'y', we punch down.

•  RAINBOW WORDS:  Write rainbow words like this.  Students write each spelling word with a crayon. They then go back and trace each word with a different color crayon two more times.

•  MAGNETIC LETTERS:  Spell words with magnetic letters on cookie sheets.

•  ALPHABET STAMPS:  Use alphabet stamps and let them stamp out their words on paper.

•  STEP WORDS:  Write words as "stairsteps" on graph paper like this:

s
sp
spe
spel
spell

•  WORD SEARCH:  Make a word search with the spelling words on graph paper and give to a friend.

•  WIKKI STICKS:  Use Wikki Sticks or pipe cleaners to bend the sticks into the desired letters to form each spelling word. After forming the Wikki Sticks, do a crayon rubbing of each word on a piece of paper.

•  TEXT MESSAGING:  The teacher prepares a paper with the spelling words written according to the key pad of a cell phone. For example, c-a-t would be 2-2-8 (C is on the 2 button, A is on the 2 button, and t is on the 8 button of a phone pad). Students will look at a telephone key pad to figure out the spelling word. They will write the spelling word on the paper the teacher has prepared.
