The Kissing Hand is a
touching story we read on the first day. The children
trace their hand on a piece of paper and I use a heart stamp
to stamp in the center of their hand print. At the
bottom, we fill in the blanks to the sentence:
________ started first grade
today at OHS and he (or she) feels __________.
At snack time, we enjoy hand
cookies with a candy kiss. You can purchase the hand
cookie cutter at Walmart or use a knife to cut the hand
shape yourself.

Chrysanthemum lends itself
to so many activities. After reading this wonderful
story, we use our names for a variety of things to do.
We also watch it on United Streaming and the children love
it the second time through!
• Math: Count letters in name. Divide into
consonants and vowels. Graph this data by letter,
consonant, and vowel.
• Name Meaning: I look up each child's name in a
baby names book and we find out the meaning of their names.
• Word Wall: Each student receives a sentence
strip with their name on it and we attach them to the Word
Wall, our first Word Wall activity.
• Character Ed: We discuss what it feels like to be
teased and how important it is to treat everyone kindly.
We discuss the Golden Rule: "Treat others the way we want to
be treated."

Thanks to Sharla Prather and Kinderkorner for
this next one.
It's to the tune
of the army cadence you're familiar with, so we call it
"The Army Song." First we start marching in place and I call out
"left, right, left, right left." After doing this a few times, I
start ...
First grade, first grade, what you say?
